The Mobile Health Research Lab in Nairobi, Kenya, researches how mobile money can be leveraged to pre-pay for healthcare, so as to reduce out-of-pocket expenses, increase transparency and trust, thereby attracting more investments in healthcare. Whilst a formal evaluation of the Lab experiments is planned, the following document describes some initial lessons learned.

The lessons were obtained while conducting experiments with a “mobile health wallet”, i.e. earmarked money that can only be used to pay for healthcare at selected healthcare facilities. For some participants, the wallet was loaded with donor subsidy, while other groups were incentivized to set aside money for healthcare themselves using the mobile health wallet as a savings tool.
