The institute, with partners from all over the world, seeks to tackle the limited access to quality health care for all. It focuses on health care delivery, a neglected side of international health care development, through an interdisciplinary approach. The AIGHD will be headed by Professor Joep Lange of the Center for Poverty-related Communicable Diseases (CPCD), Academic Medical Center (AMC) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The launch will be held on October 7th, from 4.30 pm to 7 pm in the Auditorium of the University of Amsterdam, de Oude Lutherse Kerk, Singel 411 (corner with the Spui). Earlier in the day the symposium ‘Health and Development’ will be organized in the AMC (lecture room 1), Meibergdreef 9, Amsterdam. For both programs please see www.aighd.org.

Background
The past decade has brought increasing recognition that health and development are intertwined. As a consequence, attention and funding for global health issues have greatly increased. The international health initiatives that were born out of this are, however, often targeted at major infectious diseases. Although they are certainly contributing to health system strengthening, they are not primarily addressing the nuts and bolts of sustainable health care delivery. Moreover, the last thirty years of development policy have shown that the provision of quality health care services in poor countries is a task of daunting complexity. In academic approaches to global health, the ‘delivery perspective’ has largely been neglected and is relatively new. The AIGHD is established to fill this gap. It seeks to provide sustainable solutions to major health problems across our planet, by forging synergies between disciplines, health care delivery, research and education. A full list of parent institutions, constituents and Leading Individuals is attached.

Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development
van start

Persbericht, Amsterdam, 7 oktober 2009
