PharmAccess has been working on improving access and quality of healthcare in Africa since 2001. Characteristic for the PharmAccess strategy is the way we approach the supply side and demand side of the healthcare market at the same time. The work on the supply side includes elements such as quality assurance and investments in clinics. Demand side improvements feature health insurance plans and the digital health wallet, for example. The goal is to reinforce African healthcare systems in their entirety.

PharmAccess is honored that it can count on the continued support of the National Postcode Lottery for the following five years. The world is changing rapidly due to a great number of technological developments and this offers plenty of opportunities for innovation, also for healthcare in Africa. In the PharmAccess vision, digital technology is going to radically change access to care in Africa. The support of the Dutch Postcode Lottery will provide PharmAccess with a chance to develop and test digital innovations such as the M‐TIBA mobile health wallet.

Reaching vulnerable groups
It is still a challenge to achieve access to care in Africa, particularly for poor people in remote locations and slum neighborhoods. These people, millions of them, fall out of the scope of government programs and have only themselves to rely on for basic healthcare. But they do often have a simple mobile telephone and even make use of mobile money traffic. Thanks to this they can now be reached and slowly but surely provided with ways to share in the benefits of the economic progress of their country. PharmAccess is using the mobile telephone infrastructure to connect these people to the healthcare system. In the past years our organization has already taken important steps by introducing the mobile healthcare platform M-TIBA.

In January 2016 PharmAccess, together with Amref Flying Doctors, received a contribution from the Droomfonds (Dream Fund) to combine the knowledge, quality and financing of healthcare in a smart way, all centered on a mobile health wallet. The Droomfonds was created in 2010 by the National Postcode Lottery to enable groundbreaking initiatives at the charities supported by the lottery and to create space for ambitious and solution-driven ideas.

Dutch National Postcode Lottery
The Dutch Postcode Lottery has contributed more than 4.7 billion euro to charity organizations since 1989 (2014 figures). More than 2.7 million Dutch people are currently participating in the lottery. Of the stakes, 40% goes to charity. There are 95 charities that receive an annual fixed amount – that includes Amref Flying Doctors who receive 900,000 euro annually, in addition to incidental additional contributions (13th draw) and PharmAccess (500,000 euro annually).

PharmAccess
PharmAccess works on achieving access to good and affordable healthcare for the people living in sub-Saharan Africa. Its mission is making health markets work for the poor. This organization was founded in 2001 by Dr. Joep Lange to transpose his scientific breakthroughs to practical programs that could make AIDS anti-retrovirals available in Africa. Fueled by this motivation, PharmAccess developed the integrated approach that still forms the core of its activities. Through a combination of raising quality levels and the introduction of new forms of financing, the risks for all parties involved in health are reduced. Subsequently, private investments start coming in and people with low incomes are also empowered to get insurance and to save money for unexpected medical expenses.

Nationale Postcode Loterij steunt integrale aanpak PharmAccess ook komende vijf jaar

PharmAccess richt zich komende periode op digitale zorgagenda voor Afrika

Amsterdam 28 oktober – Deze week maakt de Nationale Postcode Loterij bekend dat het de samenwerking met PharmAccess met vijf jaar verlengt. Sinds 2012 heeft de organisatie 2 miljoen euro ontvangen van de Nationale Postcode Loterij. In 2016, het laatste jaar van de overeenkomst, is de samenwerking geëvalueerd en in oktober heeft de Raad van Commissarissen besloten de samenwerking voort te zetten. Ook in de periode 2017 tot en met 2021 ontvangt PharmAccess steun voor haar werkzaamheden.

Met nieuwe technologische toepassingen, zoals de door PharmAccess ontwikkelde mobiele zorgportemonnee, bereikt de organisatie mensen die niet meekomen in de bestaande overheidszorgprogramma’s. Wij zijn er trots op dat wij het belangrijke werk van PharmAccess kunnen blijven steunen.”
PharmAccess werkt sinds 2001 aan het verbeteren van toegang tot en kwaliteit van de gezondheidszorg in Afrika. Kenmerkend voor de aanpak van PharmAccess is dat we tegelijkertijd aan de aanbodkant (kwaliteitsverbetering en investeringen in klinieken) als aan verbetering van de vraagkant van de zorgmarkt werken (met zorgverzekeringen of een digitale zorgportemonnee). Met als doel om daarmee Afrikaanse zorgsystemen als geheel te versterken.

PharmAccess is enorm trots dat het ook de komende vijf jaar kan rekenen op de steun van de Nationale Postcode Loterij. De wereld verandert ongelofelijk snel door de vele technologische ontwikkelingen en dit biedt veel innovatiekansen. Ook voor de gezondheidszorg in Afrika. In de visie van PharmAccess gaat toegang tot zorg via digitale technologie de zorg in Afrika radicaal veranderen. De verlengde steun van de Nationale Postcode Loterij stelt PharmAccess in de gelegenheid om digitale innovaties, zoals de mobiele zorgportemonnee M‐TIBA, te ontwikkelen en testen.

Onno Schellekens, algemeen directeur van PharmAccess: “Om deze kansen echt te begrijpen en te grijpen, is voor een organisatie als PharmAccess financiering voor nieuwe ideeën die zich nog niet bewezen hebben cruciaal. Ons verleden laat zien dat we daarmee voor echte innovatie en verandering kunnen zorgen. De meerjarige bijdrage van de Postcode Loterij is daardoor van onschatbare waarde en gaat veel verder dan het bedrag alleen.”

Kwetsbare groepen bereiken
Toegang tot zorg blijft een uitdaging in Afrika, met name voor arme mensen in afgelegen gebieden en sloppenwijken. Deze miljoenen mensen vallen buiten het blikveld van de overheid en zijn op zichzelf aangewezen als het gaat om basisvoorzieningen zoals zorg. Maar toegang tot een eenvoudige mobiele telefoon en zelfs tot mobiel geldverkeer hebben deze mensen vaak wel. Hierdoor kunnen ze nu toch bereikt worden en langzaamaan meeprofiteren van de economische vooruitgang in hun land.

PharmAccess gebruikt deze bestaande mobiele infrastructuur om deze mensen ook aan te sluiten op het zorgsysteem. In de afgelopen jaren heeft de organisatie hierin belangrijke stappen gezet met de introductie van het mobiele zorgplatform M-TIBA.

In januari 2016 ontving PharmAccess samen met Amref Flying Doctors een bijdrage uit het Droomfonds om kennis, kwaliteit en financiering van gezondheidszorg op een slimme manier bij elkaar te brengen rondom een mobiele zorgportemonnee. Het Droomfonds is in 2010 in het leven geroepen door de Nationale Postcode Loterij om baanbrekende initiatieven van de door de loterij gesteunde goede doelen mogelijk te maken en om ruimte te creëren om groots en oplossingsgericht te denken.

Over de Nationale Postcode Loterij – de samenleving wint altijd
De Nationale Postcode Loterij is in 1989 opgericht om goede doelen te steunen die werken aan een rechtvaardige en groene wereld. De loterij werft fondsen voor haar goede doelen en geeft bekendheid aan hun werk. Inmiddels spelen 2,7 miljoen Nederlanders mee met de loterij. Joep Lange om zijn wetenschappelijke doorbraken te vertalen naar praktische programma’s die aidsremmers beschikbaar maakten in Afrika. Vanuit deze motivatie ontwikkelde PharmAccess de integrale aanpak die nog steeds de kern is van wat de organisatie doet. Door de combinatie van het versterken van kwaliteit en het inbrengen van nieuwe financieringsvormen, worden de risico’s voor alle partijen in de zorg verkleind. Daardoor komen private investeringen op gang en kunnen ook mensen met een laag inkomen zich verzekeren en sparen voor onverwachte zorgkosten.
